Music Lessons Frequently Asked Questions
What instruments do you teach?
We offer private lessons for: guitar, bass, piano, drums, voice & ukulele
How old do you have to be to start Music Lessons?
We offer private music lessons for ages 6 and up (depending on the instrument). We have many students of all ages and skill levels. Adult and senior lessons are very popular too.
What happens if I have to cancel or miss a lesson? Do I lose that lesson?
We’ve designed our policies to be simple, student-friendly, and easy to follow.
1. Cancellations & Rollovers
-
If you need to miss a lesson, just let us know at least 3 hours before your scheduled time.
-
When you do, your lesson will roll over to the following week at no charge.
-
Each student receives 1 free rollover per 12-pack of lessons, per instrument. After that, the regular lesson fee applies.
-
This applies to all situations — sickness, holidays, or scheduling conflicts.
-
Your lesson time will always be held for you.
2. Online Lesson Option
-
Can’t make it to the store? No problem! Your teacher can do the lesson via Zoom or FaceTime during your regular time slot.
-
This option is perfect if you’re stuck at home but still want to keep your progress going.
-
Please note: the regular lesson fee applies for short-notice cancellations (less than 3 hours) or no-shows.
3. Long-Term Cancellations & No-Shows
-
If you need to cancel more than 2 weeks in a row, please contact us and we’ll work with you to find a more suitable lesson time.
-
After two consecutive no-shows with no call or message, we’ll remove you from your teacher’s schedule and reach out to arrange a different time.
✅ Simple. ✅ Flexible. ✅ Designed to help you (and your teacher) get the most out of lessons.
I don't live in Brandon. Can I still take lessons?
Yes absolutely! Our amazing music teachers are now offering Online Lessons via FaceTime and/or Zoom. Buy a pack of lessons here on our website and we will contact you to setup a time.
Do I need to own an instrument to take lessons?
Short answer: yes. To get the most value from your lessons you should have a decent quality instrument at home to practice on. We have lots of guitars, drum kits & keyboards available for sale - many starting under $200. Ask about our Student Instrument Buyback if you are unsure about purchasing an instrument.
How long does it take to learn to play an instrument?
That’s a tricky question.. we suggest starting with a 12 pack of lessons and try to practice about 10-15 minutes a day - 4 to 5 days a week. You might be surprised how fast you progress!
I'm interested in taking piano lessons. Do I need a piano or can I use a keyboard?
If you have a traditional acoustic piano (that’s in tune) that's great! Electronic pianos are a great choice as well (we stock several models starting at $499).
Portable keyboards are a very popular choice for beginners & are perfect for the first 2 or 3 years of lessons. We stock several portable keyboards for beginners starting at under $200.
What is the best instrument to learn on?
Your choice! Guitar, piano, drums – whatever you are most interested in. We have keyboards, guitars & drums available for kids as young as 6 years old.
My kid really wants to play electric guitar but I think they should start on piano or acoustic guitar first. Am I right in thinking that?
There was a time when that made sense — but not anymore. Here’s why: learning an instrument takes time and discipline, and in today’s world of constant distractions (gaming, social media, Netflix, TikTok, etc.), it’s more important than ever to start with the instrument that truly inspires you. That way, students are far more likely to stick with it and not give up from boredom or lack of interest. (Beginner instruments are all in the same price range anyway.)
Can we take a “trial” lesson to start?
Sure! We would be happy to find a spot for you to try out a lesson on any instrument you like. The trial lesson costs $35.
Will I learn music theory and to read music?
Music theory is definitely a part of any quality music lesson program. All of the teachers at Faders are qualified to provide both the practical playing side of the lessons and also as much theory as you want or need. Every student is different so the teacher will create a lesson that best fits each individual.
Do you offer lessons for adults?
Adults are always welcome and in fact make up a good portion of our new lesson students. It’s never too late to get started!
When can I sign up?
Anytime. We offer lessons 12 months a year 6 days a week.
I took lessons last season. Can I get the same teacher & day/time as I had last year?
We always do our best to schedule you with your preferred teacher and time slot but our schedules are subject to change from year to year due to changing availability from our teachers. Therefore we can't guarantee you will get the exact same day and time as you had last year.
I bought a pack of lessons and can't use them. What is your refund policy for lessons?

-
Lessons are non-refundable, but unused lessons can be converted into a Faders eGift Card (usable at Faders Music, Ted Good Music, or online at faders.ca).

How do I sign up?
